Our interest in this wonderful breed started in the thirties when my father used to vacation on the eastern shore of Maryland as a young boy. There he would see fascinating dogs called the Chesapeake Bay Retriever dive from the wharfs and docks on the Chesapeake Bay.
When he married my mother, they acquired Miss Lou's Cluny Brown out of Native Shore Miss Lou and eventually bred her to Laddie's Rowdy handled by Charles Morgan at field trials. We kept Longcove's Champagne with whom I learned to walk as a baby. She was my protector and my best friend, and thus began my involvement with Chesapeakes.
I acquired CH Eastern Waters' Gold Honey at fourteen from Janet Horn and put a CDX and a Working Dog title on her. We then acquired Eastern Waters' Bird River Gal and added a Champion Title and a CD on her. They became my foundation bitches.
"Honey" produced CH Longcove's Golden Gemini CD who was a National Specialty winner and multi-Group winner and placer. CH Eastern Waters' Bird River Gal CD, when bred, produced a National Specialty BOS winner CH Longcove's Autumn Haze CDX, Working Dog.
"Gemini", bred to only six bitches, produced ten Champions, which include two Champion UDT's.
Today Longcove is proud of its involvement with Chesapeakes having done Junior Showmanship-qualifying for the Garden, pet therapy work, 4-H "latch-key" kids Club leadership, Champion, Obedience, and Working Titles.
